How to Earn FREE Hotel Upgrades

Free Upgrades are not as hard as you would think!

I have used this strategy with a variety of hotels. I have gotten upgraded to villas, received free drinks or a free dessert. This last year I had 37 hotel night stays and over 50% of the time I got an upgrade of some kind whether it was a better view or a bigger room.

You don’t even have to have hotel STATUS!

It is not always a guarantee but something I have learned is that it never hurts to ask and hotels want you to have an enjoyable experience so you may be surprised at the extra steps they take to make you feel special.

Find Your Audience

  • Find General Manager of your hotel
  • World of Hyatt I usually message on Twitter and ask
  • Google or LinkedIn are good resources too
  • Call hotel directly to ask
  • Email 7-5 days before arrival to location

Email Set Up

  • Subject Line- include reservation number and our last name
  • Body
    • Purpose of trip (Family getaway, anniversary, exploring new sights, etc)
    • Tell them the dates you are coming and if a specific upgrade is available
    • Include why are you are excited to visit their hotel and area
    • Thank them for looking into the request and considering it
    • Close with your name and again reservation number after to make it easy for them to look up


Specific Requests

This could be a room with a certain view, more beds, a quieter location. Think about what would help you and your family enjoy your stay more while at their hotel. I will even look up my hotel stay and see what rooms are still available and ask for one of those. It doesn’t always work but remember it never hurts to ask.

That is it my friends! I know asking for something like a complimentary upgrade can seem weird but they can say no or that it isn’t possible at this time. Sometimes they just tell me they made a note in my account and they will see what they can do. Other times they will give me a discount if I wanted to purchase an upgraded room. My motto here is that it never hurts to ask.
