The Need to Know Rule to Points Success
Rules are no fun, but keeping this rule could help you get approved for more cards and allow you to earn more points for travel, so it is worth covering, even though it isn’t the most exciting thing to cover. Learn how to earn more points to get you more affordable travel!
This is one of the basics you need to know about travel using points and miles! It is called the 5/24 rule. It is this unwritten rule that all travelers who use points and miles know and people who are inexperienced wish they knew, so listen up!

5/24 refers to having 5 personal credit cards open in the span of 24 months, which is 2 years. I know what you might be thinking, well that’s not a big deal for me…check again, my friend!
I open a new card almost every 90 days, so I need to be strategic and plan out which cards I’m opening and when so that I don’t go over my limit. Here are all of the exceptions! Hold on tight! I will try to explain them as basic as I can.
Business Cards Can HELP YOU!
- Most business credit cards don’t affect your 5/24
- Business cards give you more options to earn points and different rewards
- Stay under 5/24 to get approved for Chase personal credit cards
Use Player 2
- Your Spouse, partner, or family member could be your player 2
- Alternate opening cards so you don’t fill up those 5/24 slots as fast
- Also, alternate between opening business and personal cards
