Well, 2 kids and many years later, my husband and I found that even budgeting for a once-a-year trip for us was expensive and not doable for our family budget. We had to choose between a small budget vacation and a quick weekend away for the adults.

The Turning Point: Discovering Points and Miles

Then, in 2020, after being locked down, I got the travel itch bad and had to find a solution! I fell upon earning points and miles! I dived deep into learning how to take our normal everyday costs of life and earn tens of thousands of points, allowing us to fly for nearly free and stay in free hotels!

Think it is too good to be true? Trust me, I was there too, but after my research, I thought, what do I have to lose? I am going to try it, just at a slow turtle pace.

Getting Started with Points the Right Way

Our First Card: The Chase Sapphire Preferred

My husband opened the Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card, which I refer to on social media as “my favorite beginner card.” We use this card responsibly. We put all our expenses on the card, monitored the spending, and paid the card off in full every month. We hit the minimum spend and earned the bonus!

We learned the key things to having credit cards and earning great perks while also NEVER going into debt! Learn these important guidelines.

Next, we repeated the process, and I opened the card, and a few months later, the same results! Great, you have points…now what?

Why We Chose to Start Slow and Safe

We were unsure if this could work for us and if it was too good to be true. We started slow to make sure we could use our cards responsibly and have a good system in place for paying off our cards. We wanted to stay organized and not get overwhelmed so we did slow and steady and were so thankful to have our Travel Freely app to keep us organized and see our progress along the way.

The Big Payoff: Our First Nearly Free Getaway

We booked a weekend adult-only getaway to Florida! We saw some friends, went to a friend’s wedding, and enjoyed being adults. Our flights cost us $5.60 each way, and our hotel was FREE, and they gave us a free upgrade! We paid $100 for our car rental and covered food. It was the cheapest weekend away we have ever had!
